Carved figures mounted on a ship’s bow are called nautical figureheads.
Why were these figureheads mostly of women?
Because women were regarded as the protectors of sailors at sea and played an important role in many sailors’ superstitions.
That’s why carved and painted feminine symbols were put on the naval vessels of several ancient seafaring civilizations; including the Phoenicians, Egyptians and Romans.
The feminine figureheads were affectionately referred to as “Neptune’s wooden angels.”
