Great Science Fiction — Eerie Predictions

William Gibson’s “Neuromancer” is one of my favorite books.

Henry Dorsett Case is a character I could easily identify with — a survivor and very rough around the edges.

He was a “console cowboy”, a hacker for hire until his employers found out he was stealing from them and destroyed his ability to jack into Ultra Virtual Reality with near fatal neurologicals — mycotoxins that fried his nervous system.

But then a mysterious female Samurai by the name of Molly shows up to hire him for one more job.

Once in, Case can see and interact with the systems he’s hacking in the Matrix.

The book describes the matrix (from which “the Matrix” movie aptly portrays), virtual reality, cities in space, human/computer interface, digital consciousness, and an apocalypse.

Case’s rig that enables him to “jack” into cyberspace is called a “deck” — hardware mounted on Case’s head (very similar to today’s VR and AR rigs but souped up with implants and electrodes).

This is astounding considering that the book was written over 30 years ago!

Myself and other Gibson fans have been waiting for a movie version of “Neuromancer” for over twenty years — decades fraught with rumors and false starts.

But now Tim Miller, the director of “Deadpool” has taken up the mantle and is forging ahead with the project.

“The sky above the port was the color of television, tuned to a dead channel.”

A 1984 noir novel by William Gibson, and Trope Codifier for an entire generation of Sci-Fi stories.

Neuromancer is the primary example of Cyberpunk alongside Blade Runner, showcasing the cynical use of technology so characteristic of that genre.

Most modern stories related to Cyber Punk, Cyber Space and related tropes can be largely traced back to this one story. It is also the first of Gibson’s famous Sprawl Trilogy (followed by Count Zero and Mona Lisa Overdrive).

About the Author —

Source

Believing that school was too boring, he dropped out of High School early; only to earn an AA, BS and MBA in less than 4 years much later in life — while working full-time as a Navy/Marine Corps Medic.

In spite of a fear of heights and deep water, he performed high altitude, free-fall parachute jumps and hazardous diving ops in deep, open ocean water.

After 24 years of active duty, he retired in Asia.

Since then, he’s been a full-time, single papa and actively pursuing his varied passions (Writing, Disruptive Technology, Computer Science and Cryptocurrency — plus more hobbies too boring or bizarre for most folk).

He lives on an island paradise with his teenage daughter, longtime girlfriend and three dogs.
